Allan Border and Red Dust give London school children an Aussie test 24-Jun-09
Red Dust’s International Ambassador, cricket legend Allan Border, gave a group of London schoolchildren a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity this week, providing them with one-on-one coaching in a two-hour workshop held at Surrey County Cricket Club.
Teaming with SCC Community Development, ‘AB’ introduced the Red Dust’s Lifestyle Education Programme to pupils aged 11-14 years old from Lillian Bayliss School, and was please at how they responded to the morning session.
“It was great to have been involved with the kids at Lillian Bayliss School, and Surrey. Red Dust plays an important role in the community and their work in Australia and now in India relies heavily on support from sources such as the Vodafone Foundation. We would not be able to carry out the scope or scale of our work without it,” he said.
Gary Phillips, Headmaster at the Lillian Baylis School, was similarly thrilled by the day’s activities: “To be able to give the children such a unique opportunity was a real boost for them and it was a thoroughly enjoyable day for everyone involved. Allan Border is a legend of the game and to experience his tuition is something money can’t buy. I am grateful that Red Dust Role Models, the Vodafone Foundation and Surrey County Cricket Club could provide us with this amazing experience for our pupils who have all taken something positive away from the day.”
Andrew Dunnett, director of the Vodafone Foundation, said: “Red Dust Role Models is an excellent example of a project that is successfully addressing the issues affecting disadvantaged youth. We are committed to supporting projects like this around the world and are grateful that Allan Border could find some time out of his busy schedule as a former Ashes-winning captain on the eve of the test series to give these young people the benefit of his insight on the game.”
As always, Red Dust greatly appreciates Allan Border’s time and dedication, and thanks Vodafone Foundation for the opportunity to provide a snapshot of our programme to London youth.
