TOURS A core component of Red Dust Role Model’s Lifestyle Program is to conduct Tours to remote communities and assist teachers, healthcare workers and community leaders to encourage youth to make healthy lifestyle decisions. The Tours are attended by Role Models in the areas of art, sport and music who use their specialised skills and profile to convey healthy lifestyle messages during their interaction with the community and its members. Red Dust Role Models runs several tours each year, each lasting approximately 5 days. Highlights of the tours often include the excitement and development of the children, the impact it has on the role models and the collaborative creation of a ‘Tour Song’ by the students, which is played at the community hall and/or schools long after the tour has concluded. ‘I have once again
been reminded how privileged I am to be invited into the communities we
visit. The educational side of the tours
goes both ways – while we may teach the kids sporting techniques and share
knowledge in the classroom, the stories that the children and community members
take time to share with us are really special.’ Linley Frame, Role Model and Red Dust Ambassador Recently, tours have expanded from being held in remote indigenous communities in Australia to international communities such as India and Fiji. 2009 has been earmarked as an exciting and challenging year for Red Dust with around 13 tours proposed for the year ahead.
