Our Top End tour began with a full afternoon preparing the three teams for their respective journeys, organizing food and supplies, uniforms and sporting equipment - making sure that all could fit on the small charter planes. Team Milingimbi fared the worst, crammed into a small aircraft with swags, two-thirds of their food supply and all their gear...for a 2.5-hour journey to East Arnhem. All returned with huge smiles and great stories to share...here are a few highlights: Milikapiti is on the northern coast of Melville Island, 105km by air (25 mins ) from Darwin. Population: approximately 450 School: Milikapiti School Students Participating: approximately 50 Programs Delivered: Music, Goal Setting, Classroom Support, Sport (basketball and organized games) Highlights of Visit: ∙ Working closely with the students in the classroom, assisting with literacy curriculum ∙ Creating a new song for Milikapiti School called ‘Open Arms', and seeing the pride and delight on the faces of students and teachers when they heard the song and saw the music film clip ∙ Engaging our partner representative, Traci, in a Goal Setting session in which she shared her inspiring stories of her hard work and success after leaving her community ∙ Enjoying the welcoming hospitality of Milikapiti School and bunking down in the Primary classroom
Milingimbi is approximately 500kms east of Darwin, an island half a kilometer off of the mainland in East Arnhem. Population: approximately 1000 (including community and Homelands) School: Milingimbi CEC Students Participating: approximately 60 Programs Delivered: Art, Classroom Support and Sport (football, cricket and organized games) Highlights of Visit: ∙ Art activities that produced beautiful creations as well as works of art with positive and inspiring messages that reinforced community and self-pride ∙ The new friendships forged between the students, community and the team ∙ The invaluable support and assistance from Amanda Maxwell, Milingimbi CEC's Health and Physical Education Coordinator ∙ The enthusiastic participation of the students and willingness to ‘have a go'
Wadeye (Port Keats) is situated on the western edge of the Daly River Reserve, about a 50-minute flight from Darwin. Population: approximately 2000 (including several clan groups and seven languages) School: Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH) Students Participating: approximately 100 Programs Delivered: Drama & Dance, Healthy Body (nutrition and exercise) Classroom Support and Sport (basketball, softball and organized games) Highlights of Visit: ∙ Returning to Wadeye and hearing their song from Red Dust's last visit still being played ∙ Introducing Drama and Dance programs successfully, with a very enthusiastic reception from the OLSH students Team Milikapiti: Linley Frame - Swimming Melissa Thompson - Team Leader Brett Wheeler - Basketball Adam Thompson - Music Craig Hindman - Music Traci Williams - Team Support /Qantas
