Pride in Progress: A vision becomes legacy - a legacy that secures the future

From a dining table idea to a community-led movement, Red Dust marks 20 years of First Nations leadership and role models—proof that communities are driving change.

What began at a family dining table has become a community-led movement. Two decades on, we’re celebrating the real story of progress: First Nations leadership growing from within, role models emerging locally, and a cycle of learning and leading that keeps returning home.

In the early days, volunteers travelled to communities to be positive role models for young people. That spirit sparked something bigger. Today, the model has shifted—by design and by community demand.

“We’re seeing role models from Red Dust itself—First Nations people within our communities—leading programs, leading in community, enriching the lives of kids.” That is the milestone we’re most proud of.

Progress looks like many things: a new youth mentor stepping into a paid role; stronger attendance at health sessions; a former student returning to co-teach; a family sharing how their routines have shifted. These wins are not one-offs. They’re the result of years of relationships, listening, and steady work—led by communities, powered by culture, and sustained by local leadership.

Communities are driving change. When young people see someone from their own community thrive—in school, sport, work, or cultural leadership—it expands what feels possible. And when those role models return to share their journey, a powerful cycle begins: learn, lead, return, repeat.

This is the legacy we’re building together: more leadership that’s local, more programs that are co-led, and more pathways shaped on Country. As one community leader put it, “We’re proud of how far we’ve come—and we’re not done.”

To every elder, parent, educator, mentor, volunteer, and partner who has walked alongside Red Dust over the past 20 years—thank you. Your belief in community-led leadership is the reason we’re celebrating today, and the reason we’re confident about tomorrow.
