Walking in Both Worlds: Code-switching effortlessly between them

Walking strongly in all worlds—culture, community, school, work and play—means being grounded in identity and confident moving between them with ease.

Walking in both worlds means being grounded in culture while navigating every other world with confidence — community, school, work, sport and play.

Young people do this every day: translating between languages, expectations and rhythms; stepping between cultural responsibility and classroom learning; carrying who they are into every space they move through.

As Jonathan puts it, this is cross‑cultural competency — “mob standing strong in all worlds.”

It’s the ability to code‑switch effortlessly without losing yourself: speaking in language with pride, contributing in the classroom with confidence, supporting family, connecting with Country, and interpreting health or school systems with clarity. This is not about fitting in — it’s about standing strong.

When programs start with identity, young people don’t have to choose between worlds — they learn to lead across them. In workshops, a student might present in language then map a health plan in English; another might teach a game from home before problem‑solving a science activity. These experiences build capability without compromising culture.

We want the young people to learn both ways - Whitefella ways and Anangu ways, and one day they'll become the leaders for this community." - Justin Corby, Kintore

Mentors and teachers who listen, learn and follow community guidance create spaces where this multi‑world confidence can grow. And when young people feel seen and respected in all their worlds, something powerful happens: they step forward, ask questions, take risks and lead.

When culture is centred, confidence grows. And when confidence grows, young people walk strongly in every world they move through.
