Leadership Is Local: Community-led facilitation shaping lasting change

Local leadership strengthens programs. When community facilitators guide learning, knowledge stays on Country — shaping confidence, culture and strong pathways forward.

Red Dust is a partner and enabler of real impact that is led locally — shaped by the people who know their community best. Today we spotlight Ned Jampijinpa Hargraves, a respected Warlpiri Elder whose leadership has strengthened Red Dust programs in Yuendumu for years.

Ned shares stories with his community that stretched across generations — from memories of early contact with non‑Aboriginal people to reflections on how community ways and new systems have shaped health, identity and daily life. His knowledge gently guides young people to understand both the opportunities and the challenges that come with walking in multiple worlds. He reminds them that culture is a strength they carry into every space.

Local facilitators like Ned bring nuance no outside team can replicate: the right story at the right moment; the gentle pause that invites a shy student to step forward; the precise word in language that unlocks a concept. They model leadership that is culturally grounded and future‑focused.

Ned hopes young people will continue drawing on the strengths of both the old ways and the new — giving them “every chance to identify and achieve their aspirations.”

This approach builds continuity. Sustainable change is community‑led. When facilitators are from the community, knowledge doesn’t leave when a workshop ends — it lives in the clinic, on the oval, in homes and in school yards.

Leadership like Ned’s is why positive change lasts. Red Dust is proud to follow local leaders and to keep learning alongside.
