A creative journey with Tiwi

Tiwi delivers a unique arts-focused initiative, combining comic book creation with the energy and inspiration of AFLW players.

The program was designed to promote health and well-being through creative expression, physical activity, and cultural connection, leaving a lasting impact on students, teachers, and facilitators alike.

Exploring heroes through comic book creation

Students were introduced to the fascinating world of comics, encouraging them to create their own superhero characters. This creative outlet allowed students to explore what being a "hero" means to them personally, developing unique characters with imaginative superpowers such as flying, bravery, or acts of kindness. The workshops built self-confidence, encouraged storytelling and artistic expression. Students worked closely with facilitators to sketch, write character stories, and develop superhero origin tales using both traditional methods and digital tools like Procreate.

Comic book activities the students loved:

  • comic book quizzes to engage and inspire creativity
  • outlining and sketching superhero characters
  • learning about character expression, motion, and storytelling
  • transitioning comic designs from paper to iPads
  • developing backstories for their superheroes, exploring how they acquired their powers.

AFLW Players bring energy, respect, and fun

Adding to the excitement, two AFLW players—Emma King and Sarah Lampard—joined the Red Dust team to foster respect, teamwork, and a love for fitness through sports. With Shane Tipuamantamerri facilitating, the players engaged students in AFL-inspired skill-building games and discussions about staying active, aiming high, and being proud of one's roots.

"Hopefully, more AFL players come along for us Tiwi girls." – Bella

Emma even embraced the Tiwi culture by learning the local language during a card game and connecting with students and staff through shared experiences.

Cultural connection and exploration

The program celebrated Tiwi culture, blending modern creativity with traditional knowledge. Participants were painted in white clay by Senior Young Women ) at the creek, who explained the cultural significance of clay and its connection to their heritage. The AFLW players and facilitators supported this cultural exchange, learning alongside the students and honouring the traditions shared.

"The young women feel special having the AFLW players here and being able to train with them." – Teacher

Participants found the creative comic sessions particularly impactful for senior students, allowing them to channel their creativity into something meaningful. Meanwhile, collaborative storytelling boosted literacy and encouraged teamwork among the younger students.

Impact highlights of skills and connections created

  • Students gained knowledge of comics and storytelling, along with skills in sketching, digital design and camera skills with filming parts of the program.
  • AFLW players inspired students to pursue physical fitness and take pride in their heritage.
  • Deeper cultural connections were fostered through shared experiences including opportunities to reconnect with family and strengthening ties to community.
  • The community embraced the concept of a hero as being someone who inspires, helps others, and represents strong values.

The Tiwi community expressed interest in a continuation of the program, seeking funding for a follow-up focused on transitioning comics into film production.

Additionally, a music program was requested, signalling a desire to expand artistic opportunities further.
