Yuwa from Yuendumu

A warm welcome from the community created a buzz of excitement and the small team had a great week working with kids on language, literacy.

While the threat of COVID has not completely receded we are really pleased to have a COVID-safe 2021 program plan in place and our first team has been out on-country to visit and work with young people and their families in the community of Yuendumu.

The warm welcome from the community created a buzz of excitement and the small team had a great week working with kids on language, literacy and cultural activities.

Our Senior Cultural Advisor, Alice Napurrurla Nelson led a number of classes through Bush Tucker reading activities in the local Warlpiri language.

During these classes the students played memory games to test their Warlpiri and English word skills and completed art activities relating to what they learned about bush tucker.

To enhance their learning and bring a greater connection to culture and land there was an on-country learning experience where students found and gathered bush tucker they had been learning about in the classroom.

There was Yunkaranyi (honey ant hunting), Kilyawu (lizard hunting) and gathering of Yawakayi (bush blueberries).

For young people living in remote communities, English is often the 3rd, 4th or 5th language they learn.

With your support we can provide opportunities for young people to learn in their local language and have meaningful on-Country learning experiences.
