Move over Cirque Du Soleil!

Red Dusts Healthy Living Program brings the circus to town!

Nothing but smiles for the Healthy Living Circus Program in Yuendumu. The students got to show off their moves while also being taught new techniques in acrobatics, skipping, gymnastics, slack lining and hula hooping. A great way to get the body moving while (most importantly) having fun!

The week was a great way to bring students of all ages together to experience something fresh and exciting, being able to channel energy into positive movement and self expression. It was a nice way to break up the school day by providing an energy boost in the form of practicing skills and flexibility.

Each student was able to identify the elements of circus they connected with, while also overcoming any fears and anxiety the may have been experiencing towards the activities that required more practice. Each activity was met with enthusiasm by the students.

Safe Touch and Conversations around consent

Through classroom-based discussions on consent and safe touch students navigated these conversations thoughtfully and respectfully. Students then reflected on these conversations and themes and used them in direct practice while engaging in the circus program, students asked – can I touch your hand, do you need to hold my hand on the slackline, I am here if you need.

Teachers informed Red Dust Staff that the classroom conversations around safe touch and consent were important for this ongoing theme.

Student participation from Yuendumu School remained consistent throughout the week, reflecting strong engagement with the program.

Teachers informed Red Dust staff that students had been looking forward to the program attending and they were eager to attend school. Students saw teachers and assistant teachers having a go at circus activities too, creating a sense of togetherness and willingness to try new things. Assistant teachers supported sessions in language and guided students throughout the sessions through conversations or physical support when completing a trick, highlighting the program’s effectiveness in fostering meaningful relationships, fostering consent and safe touch.

The program created paid employment opportunities for a young community member to be involved in the school sessions – this supported skill development and workplace readiness. Through this new connection this young person has identified that they would like to employed during other trips and programs.
