An incredible week of dance, sport, art and culture.
When we heard Bella say “I get to learn more about my students.” it resonated deeply with us. Bella is a teacher from the local school who we recently got to reconnect with. Her words ring true to our own experience, each time we visit its like reconnecting with our family. The children continue to grow and flourish in every aspect of their life, and its an incredible transformation to observe.
Over the last few years Red Dust have built a relationship and ongoing connection with Peppi, so getting to to see everyone was a reminder of why showing up consistently for community must remain an integral part of our work.
The week was spent coming together to practice, learn and engage in programs such as dance, sport and art activities. Embedding culture into these programs was natural, with the students taking a strong interest and lead in each activity, influencing the way we as a team operated alongside them.
Yarning circles about shame, belonging and safe relationships with peers was also a massive part of the week and heavily driven by the students themselves.
We also offered students the chance to learn how to fly the drone, which was incredibly popular and a great way for the community to see their town from a new and exciting perspective.
“My favourite part of the week was flying the Drone because I have never flown one before”.
- Cambden, 12 years old.
Our Dance facilitator, and Red Dust friend Rhys De La Cruz once again stole the show!
Rhys is a hip hop artist from QLD and NT, with family ties in Broome, Arnhem Land and The Torres Strait Islands who loves to infuse cultural dance with hip hop dance making it his own. Rhys’ dance style expand across Bboy/Bgirl(breaking) classes, Afro Dancehall and popping and locking. His connection with the students didn't go unnoticed and was one that inspired trust, confidence and group connection.
The last time Red Dust visited the community we created a music video with the students, Peppi Pride, which is now live on our Youtube Channel. Head over to Red Dust Youtube channel to check it out now! During this trip we got to share the final music video with the community which was a special moment for all to witness the strength, pride and connection to culture and community. Thanks to everyone who helped make this trip a deadly one.
“This trip, Red Dust really have brought out a very engaging team.”
Eric, Principal of Peppi School
